How to Create a Custom Template in Microsoft Office

A template is a design with prearranged settings like style, image, logo, etc. If you’re a regular user of Microsoft Word, you must be familiar with templates that are used to create similar documents.



Microsoft Office offers you a range of templates you can choose from. An alternative to selecting a template is to customize one as per your requirement. You can create a template with the help of Microsoft Office without compromising with the existing designs it offers.

You can save a template in the ‘.dotx’ format and use it as many times as you want to create a new document without having to start from the basics. Doing this will save a lot of time and effort, and is a convenient option to take.

How to create a custom template in Microsoft Office?

The steps to create a customized template using Microsoft Office are:

Note: A template can be created with Microsoft 365, Word 2019, Word 2016, and older versions.

  1. Open the ‘Word’ app on your Windows.

  2. Click on the ‘Home’ tab from the left toolbar.

  3. Select the ‘Blank Document’ on the window.

  4. Create a document that you want to save as a template.

  5. Now, go to the ‘File’ option on the top left corner of the word window.

  6. A pop-up menu will appear. Click on the ‘Save As’ button.

  7. Tap on the ‘Browse’ option below the ‘Save As’ section.

  8. Select a location to save your template and assign a name to your file.

  9. Set the save as type option to ‘.dotx’ format.

  10. Finally, click on the ‘Save’ button.

You can choose to edit the template any time and save them to make the changes for the next use.

How to use a custom template in Microsoft Office?

The steps to use a customized template using Microsoft Office are:

  1. Open the ‘Word’ app on your Windows.

  2. Click on the ‘new’ tab on the left toolbar.

  3. Tap on the ‘Personal’ tab in the window.

  4. Choose the name of the template you’ve customized.

  5. Now, create a new document following the template.

  6. Go to the ‘File’ option and click ‘Save.’

  7. Set a location for the document to get saved and assign a name to it.

  8. Click on the ‘Save’ button.

Following the steps above will create a new document using the existing customized template.

Note: Working with the customized templates is only supported by the Desktop version of the Microsoft Word, not the web version. You can only use the templates offered by Word while you’re working with the web version.
